Exproof Fan Maintenance: Periodic Inspection Guide for Hazardous Areas
Correct fan selection is only the beginning of hazardous-area safety. Maintaining that protection throughout the operating life depends on inspection and maintenance. An inappropriate intervention can weaken the certified protection features of the equipment.
Why is maintenance different from a standard fan?
Maintenance in hazardous areas is not performed only to prevent performance loss. Loose connections, corrosion, damaged cable glands, loss of earthing or mechanical rubbing can create potential ignition hazards. Inspection must therefore be performed by competent personnel using suitable procedures.
What should be checked periodically?
- Deformation or rubbing marks on casing, impeller and guards
- Condition of motor, terminal box, cable glands and connections
- Continuity of earthing and equipotential bonding
- Unusual increases in bearing noise, vibration or temperature
- Legibility of labels, certification and equipment identification
Why is cleaning important?
Dust accumulation can reduce cooling, cause imbalance and increase surface temperature. In combustible-dust processes, housekeeping is particularly important. Cleaning methods must not damage the equipment or introduce electrostatic or spark hazards.
Care with replacement parts
The protection integrity of explosion-protected equipment can be compromised by unauthorised modifications. Manufacturer instructions and certification conditions must be followed when replacing motors, glands, fasteners, bearings or other critical parts. Repairs that affect certified protection should not be treated as ordinary workshop work.
How should a maintenance plan be established?
Inspection frequency should reflect corrosion, dust loading, operating hours, vibration and the facility risk assessment. For electrical installations in hazardous areas, the current IEC 60079-17 approach together with manufacturer documentation provides an important technical reference.
