What Are IIA, IIB and IIC Gas Groups? Selecting the Correct Exproof Equipment Group
In hazardous-area equipment selection, saying that equipment is suitable for the zone is not enough. The gas or vapour group must also be known. IIA, IIB and IIC are key classifications that determine the level of explosion protection required from Group II equipment.
What do gas groups mean?
For Group II equipment, explosive gases and vapours are classified into IIA, IIB and IIC subgroups. The classification is related to ignition characteristics and the ability of a flame to propagate through small gaps. IIC applications generally impose more demanding equipment design requirements than IIA or IIB.
Typical examples for IIA, IIB and IIC
- IIA: Propane is a typical reference gas.
- IIB: Ethylene is a typical reference gas.
- IIC: Includes more demanding gases such as hydrogen and acetylene.
Can a higher gas group cover a lower one?
Where the certification and all other conditions are suitable, IIC-marked equipment may be used for IIB and IIA applications, while IIB equipment may be used for IIA. The reverse is not acceptable. Certificate conditions, temperature class and protection concept must still be verified.
Why gas group matters for exproof fans
A fan may handle an explosive atmosphere directly, dilute it through ventilation or operate inside the hazardous area. The complete fan certification therefore matters, not only the motor gas group. Suitability becomes especially critical in IIC applications involving hydrogen or acetylene.
What project information should be provided?
A technical selection request should include the zone, gas name or gas group, temperature class, ambient temperature, required airflow and system pressure. This allows aerodynamic performance and hazardous-area suitability to be evaluated together.
