What Are IIA, IIB and IIC Gas Groups? Selecting the Correct Exproof Equipment Group
When selecting exproof equipment, saying that the equipment is “suitable for the Zone” is not enough. The explosion group of the gas or vapour in the environment must also be known. The IIA, IIB and IIC classification is one of the key parameters defining the protection requirements for equipment used in explosive gas atmospheres.
What do gas groups mean?
For Group II equipment, explosive gases and vapours are classified into subgroups IIA, IIB and IIC. This classification relates to characteristics such as ignition behaviour and the ability of a flame to propagate through narrow gaps. The equipment design and protection construction must satisfy the requirements of the relevant gas group.
In general terms, IIA is less demanding, IIB more demanding and IIC the most demanding gas subgroup. This does not mean that “IIC can be used everywhere under all conditions”. Gas group is only one selection parameter; zone/category, protection concept, temperature class, EPL and certificate conditions must also be verified.
Project documentation should therefore state the process substance or the required gas group whenever possible rather than simply writing “exproof”.
Typical examples for IIA, IIB and IIC
Common reference examples used to explain the gas groups are:
- IIA: the typical group for propane-like gases and vapours
- IIB: the typical group for ethylene-like gases
- IIC: the group that includes more demanding gases such as hydrogen and acetylene
These examples are a practical starting point, but a real plant decision should be based on reliable process/safety data for the substance in use and the hazardous-area classification. Trade names, mixtures or differing operating conditions mean that memorised examples alone are not a sufficient basis for selection.
Where several flammable gases or vapours may be present, the project team should determine which condition is the governing one.
Does a higher group cover a lower group?
Provided the other certification conditions are satisfied, IIC-marked equipment may be considered for applications requiring IIC, IIB or IIA, while IIB-marked equipment may be considered for IIB and IIA. Equipment marked only IIA is not suitable where IIB or IIC is required.
This coverage logic applies only to the gas group parameter. An IIC product can still be unsuitable if its temperature class is insufficient, if it does not meet the required category/EPL for the site, or if the certificate contains special conditions that are not met.
The complete marking should therefore be compared with the site requirement instead of treating one “higher” parameter as proof of overall suitability.
Why is it important when selecting an exproof fan?
An exproof fan may operate inside a volume containing an explosive atmosphere or it may convey air containing flammable gas or vapour through a duct system. In both cases, the certified scope of the complete fan, not only the motor, is important.
An incorrect gas-group selection can result in the motor, connection parts or mechanical design being unsuitable for the site conditions. In applications requiring IIC in particular, the product nameplate, certificate scope and required protection concept should be checked carefully.
Performance selection continues as a separate verification. A fan with the correct gas group still cannot perform the ventilation duty if it does not provide the required airflow and pressure.
What should be stated in the project information?
A technical selection request should include the following information whenever possible:
- Zone classification and gas-atmosphere information
- Gas name or required IIA/IIB/IIC group
- Required temperature class
- Ambient and conveyed-air temperature
- Required airflow and total pressure
- Fan type, installation arrangement and duct information where applicable
These inputs allow hazardous-area suitability and aerodynamic performance to be evaluated at the same time. If gas-group information is missing, it is safer to complete the site classification before finalising the equipment selection.
